If, on the other hand, you are looking for lots of pictures of great riders and equally great horses, this is it! It is a beautiful book with a lot of photographs and very little text. It takes the reader through the ‘ideal’ developmental stages of dressage but without detail. I was looking for more practical words of wisdom on how to achieve the pictured perfection, but found none.

This book is full of large photos of what dressage should look like and in my years of riding I can tell you a picture is worth a thousand words. Every trainer in the country uses all the same words but unless his horses look like these he is incorect, it is that simple. The poll is the highest point always and the head should never be bent past the vertical. Klimke did a great job of collecting pictures of real horese being schooled in dressage corectly something few trainers bother to do nowdays anywhere in the world. Use your eyes and you can learn volumes from this slim work!

This book is one of the most beautifully photographed books on dressage and horse sports in general available. Even if you are not a dressage lover, the chronicle of the developing horse will be of interest. This book includes some very rare photographs of some of dressage’s great equine and human athletes. With the untimely demise of Dr Klimke the book will certainly be more difficult to obtain.

A truly inspirational and informative read. This is the auto-biography of Ahlerich and Dr. Reiner Klimke, Olympic Dressage Gold Medalists. Anyone interested in the sport of Dressage will gain valuable insight into the trials and tribulations of training to the top. Dr. Klimke writes about Ahlerich, surprisingly given the fluid harmony and partnership displayed, was a very headstrong horse and a challenge to train! who would have guessed? I still get chills when I rewind (in my mind) that gold medal ride way back in 1984. I wish I had it on video!

Most people know who these two are. If you do not, Reiner Klimke and Ahlerich won the Olympic Gold Medal in 1984. In the book Klimke reveals the full story behind their achievements. Seems Ahlerich was difficult and headstrong. I was given the book as a gift and to my surprise I really enjoyed the story. I was sorry the book ended. I think the book is fun, interesting with warmth and humor, enjoy.

It is a very helpful book on training, problems that can occur. The one-on-one relationship with Ahlerich and all horses is so special. His helpful tips in using patience and the basics throughout the levels makes this a must read book. Book is also light and funny during the training. With his untimely death, this is a sure classic for all equestrians!

This book covers the training of Ahlerich from the horses purchase up to winning an Olympic Gold medal. Dr. Reiner Klimke shows the sensitive, always thoughtful handling, that went into the training of this great horse. He explains in detail why he did things a certain way with this particular horse. Like a Diamond cutter with a precious stone, Dr. Klimke was ever careful to preserve the brilliance and purity of movement that Ahlerich was blessed with. How easily one careless touch of the spur or jab in the mouth could destroy all this brilliance forever. Dr. Klimke was the best!

I first read this book 20 years ago, soon after it was published in English by Half Halt Press. I found many of the training concepts were far more advanced of my own dressage education at that time. But because the story itself about one man, his horse, and their climb to the top of the dressage world was so wonderful, I lent the book to another dressage enthusiastic…. never to see it again.

This year, I purchased a well preserved used copy of the book through Amazon. The story is still a joy to read, and now the training tidbits, concepts, and pearls of wisdom Reiner Klimke shares in the book are applicable to my own riding and teachings. This copy will not be loaned out to anyone!

I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves dressage and horses in general. And keep tight hold of it. Out of print, this book is a true classic.

This book is a lovely, well-illustrated comparison of the four great European Schools of classical dressage. Not only are the individual histories of the schools, their riding style and their horses compared, there is a detailed description of each uniform. A must have for classical dressage enthusiasts!
